Ignorance not bliss for women dying of stroke each week
"110 women under the age of 65 in the UK will have a stroke this week and 37 will die as a result. Of these, 15 could have been saved by simply controlling their blood pressure, the single biggest risk factor for stroke. A new survey, carried out by GfK NOP for the charity has revealed that 60 per cent of women don't even know what their blood pressure is and 67 per cent are unaware what an 'optimal' reading should be. The survey also found that while more than a fifth (22 per cent) of women surveyed had been prescribed medication to control their blood pressure, more than half (12 per cent) of these said they did not take their tablets regularly, putting themselves at risk of death or disability from a stroke" - The Stroke Association, UK
