DRI develops alternative drug to statins

"The Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, India, has received the 'Innovation Award' from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for developing a new drug which is a better alternative to the statins used worldwide for lowering high cholesterol levels. CDRI Director Rakesh Tuli said unlike the statins, the new drug - Gugulipid - has no side-effects. 'Statins have various side-effects like muscular fatigue, pain and degeneration of muscles.
